The peripheries at the center of Climate Justice and Good Living

LAB SulxSul is an international meeting organized by the Procomum Institute in partnership with the UMI Fund – an international organization dedicated to supporting innovative and resilient solutions on the climate agenda – to strengthen collaboration between organizations from the Global South (based in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia) that act and build climate justice narratives and actions in their territories.

Faced with the challenges we face, we need to think and act both locally and globally. This meeting will be an opportunity to strengthen movements in the Global South by connecting adjacent organizations working at the intersection of climate change and equality. As grassroots movements strengthen and expand, the ability to strategically engage key audiences is essential to building a broader coalition capable of influencing policies and narratives.

SulxSul is a space for communicators, organizers, mobilizers, creatives, activists to come together, share their expertise and experiences, learn together, talk about resources, politics, common challenges, solutions found and strengthen each other.

The event also aims to stimulate collaboration and collective leadership and strengthen a transdisciplinary network of highly creative initiatives with a special focus on climate justice.

It is essential to support activism from the Global South

The SouthXSouth meeting is an opportunity for organizations from countries in the Global South, formerly known as ‘developing’ countries, to discuss key issues such as climate justice. Focusing on climate finance for the Global South is crucial to promoting collaborations with organizations and funds.

In 2022, rich countries mobilized $115.9 billion in climate finance for this region, but an Oxfam report indicated that up to $88 billion was committed in international negotiations. It is believed that developing materials, consolidating data and promoting dialogue initiatives are fundamental steps towards strengthening philanthropy and guaranteeing a distribution of resources that meets the needs of the local communities most affected by climate change.

OUR PURPOSE WITH SULXSUL IS:

Convening
  • Generate a sense of belonging in participants
“What I do makes sense, I’m not alone in the world”
  • Reduce the gap between organizations and funders and strengthen relationships; better understanding how funders can support CSOs and movements to be open and collaborative in a world of scarce resources
  • Fostering resilience and the exchange of methodologies and technologies among its beneficiaries
  • Strengthen the Baixada Santista Climate Justice Network
  • Create a network of mutual support and project development from South to South – building trust and generosity, working from a perspective of abundance
  • Strengthen social movements and CSOs working in a world of polycrisis
Citizen Laboratory
  • Developing collective ideas and projects that strengthen the partnership between orgs and activists from the Global South
  • Carry out projects that perpetuate the commons and citizen innovation – open source initiatives for replication, free culture, that encourage decolonial practices in intersection with climate justice.
  • Form alliances around ideas and projects so that they can continue

“A river doesn’t stop being a river because it flows into another river; on the contrary, it becomes itself and other rivers, becoming stronger.” – Antônio Bispo dos Santos

What SulxSul promotes

The convening promotes an immersive methodology of citizen innovation, collective care and collective intelligence, with the realization of a citizen laboratory. The agenda includes visits by participants to indigenous territories in Baixada Santista and to community projects in the region, as well as exchanges and conversation circles using a methodology specially developed by the Procomum team. We have created a caring, safe and trusting environment, but also one that encourages collaboration on projects and prototypes chosen in advance or during the meeting for their potential for impact and dissemination, with the following premises:

1.

Collaboration and Co-creation:

Involves collective participation in the process of creating and developing solutions, promoting the exchange of knowledge and experiences between participants.

2.

Diversity of Profiles:

Selects people with different skills, knowledge and experience, ensuring a multidisciplinary and inclusive approach.

3.

People-Centered Methodology:

Prioritizes the participants’ needs, ideas and proposals, creating an environment of mutual learning and development.

4.

Care:

Offering individual and collective care actions with an interdisciplinary and integrative focus, centered on the unique and common needs of the people involved.
